Haparanda is situated at the gateway to Lapland, just 80 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, where the mighty and pristine Torne River flows into the apex of the Gulf of Bothnia. Haparanda together with its Finnish twin town Tornio is a transport node and gateway to the whole Barents Region.

Haparanda and Tornio together have 34,000 inhabitants. The twin towns have a shared history going back centuries. Long coexistence as neighbours has given rise to a unique and vibrant cultural scene in the area.

Already the colourful history of the area itself indicates that its people have always had a strong innovative capacity in a spirit of cooperation. The planning of the future of the area is also a joint activity that started in the beginning of the 1970s.

Today Haparanda and Tornio are modern and growing industrial and commercial border towns. The twin towns are known all over Europe for their unique cross-border cooperation. The new shared town centre, which is under construction at the border, includes a newly-built branch of
IKEA.

The twin towns have a good transport infrastructure: The nearest airport, Tornio-Kemi airport, is situated only 20 kilometres from Haparanda and two highways, the E4 and the E8, pass through the towns. There is also a harbour.

Nature in Haparanda offers a wonderful experience in any season. The town offers open spaces and a sense of quality, as well as friendly and hospitable inhabitants who welcome visitors to their special mixture of Swedish and Finnish culture and languages. Everybody who visits Haparanda and the twin town Tornio takes home fond memories of the North.
